Birmingham, Alabama

May 3, 2010

Dear Miss England’s class,

Last weekend, Tidy Teddy traveled with me to our neighboring state of Alabama! He wore his seatbelt in the car, as every good Teddy does. We drove 3 hours to the city of Birmingham. Our first adventure was to my friend Jaki’s bridal shower. A bridal shower is like a party to celebrate before a girl gets married. We had good food, played games, and Jaki opened gifts! Jaki’s niece, Emma, was there before the shower and loved playing with Tidy Teddy.  At our friend Josh’s apartment, we played the video game Rock Band and Tidy Teddy rocked out on the drums.  He also helped cook some delicious eggs for breakfast! Before we left Birmingham, we went shopping at a store called Penzey’s. Penzey’s sells the most yummy spices and seasonings and there is not a store in Nashville, so we have to go in Birmingham while we are there! Tidy Teddy had a wonderful time in Alabama!!

Quartz Hill, California

April 22, 2010

Dear Miss England’s class,

Tidy Teddy came to visit me in Quartz Hill, California several weeks ago, he was very patient when I told him he was going to see the beautiful wildflowers, because we had to wait for them to bloom, sometimes there’s not enough rain, or sun, and sometimes it gets very windy here and the flowers close up.

We live in what is known as the Mojave Desert and each spring, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve comes alive with the seasonal surprises of the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat.  The duration and intensity of colors and scents vary from year to year.  Although the wildflower season generally lasts from as early as mid-February through mid-May, the wild flowers need the right combination of rain, and sun to bloom.  At the Poppy Preserve there are eight miles of trails through the gentle rolling hills, which are covered in bright orange poppies.  The wildflowers aren’t limited to the preserve they blanket the valley floor and hills.  You can get away from the city and relax in the quiet of the countryside, with only the birds singing and hawks gliding silently overhead.  There are benches located along the trails making good places to sit quietly and watch for wildlife, such as singing meadow larks, lizards zipping across the trail, gopher snakes and rattlesnakes.  If you’re lucky, you may spot a coyote or bobcat.  Numerous burrows around the trails may house mice, gophers, kangaroo rats, beetles, scorpions, or others.  Tidy Teddy felt very lucky because we didn’t see any rattlesnakes.

Springfield, Oregon

Dear Ms. England’s class,

Teddy came to visit Oregon!  He spent the weekend with me and my family on our horse farm in Springfield, Oregon.  Teddy had to travel more than 2,300 miles to come see us.  He made it to Oregon just in time to see a baby horse being born, it was very exciting. We stayed up very late to make sure that the new baby and mother were doing well, the next morning we got up and turned the rest horses out.  As you can see from the pictures, it is very rainy in Oregon, which is what makes it so green this time of year.  Teddy also helped feed the chickens and got to play with a batch of kittens that were born on the farm a few weeks ago.  After all our morning chores were done I took Teddy for a riding lesson, he was a natural and had a very good time.

Teddy had lots of fun taking care of all the animals on the farm, but it is a lot of work so we decided to have some fun and go to the coast for a quick visit.  Oregon is on the Pacific Ocean and has beautiful beaches, but it can be a bit cold and windy this time of year so even the dogs wear their coats!

We all had a great visit with Teddy and hope his adventure continues,

Sincerely,

Lauren & Gustavo (and all the animals at the farm)

North Bethesda, Maryland

Dear Ms. England’s class,

Today I visited another Bloomingdale’s store.  Yesterday I visited the Bloomingdale’s store in Illinois where Ms. England’s Aunt Janet works.  Aunt Janet told me she has lots of friends at other stores throughout the country.  Her friend Laura works at the store in North Bethesda, Maryland.  When I arrive in Maryland, I had no idea where to go, so I went to the Maryland Travel Information center.  They welcomed me to Maryland and gave me directions to the store.

When I arrived at Bloomingdale’s, I had lunch with Alice in Wonderland at the “Mad Hatters Tea Party.”  Boy that cake was good!

I’ve really enjoyed visiting two Bloomingdale’s stores and meeting all of their kind employees!

Tidy Teddy’s Day AT Bloomingdale’s

Today I visited Ms. England’s Aunt Janet in Oak Brook IL., she works at Bloomingdale’s which is a big department store. She is the Merchandising Supervisor for the store and it is her job to make everything look nice so people will want to shop there.

First Aunt Janet showed me all of the beautiful flowers for sale, they were so pretty, then she let her friend Jodi hold me a the top of the ladder while she worked on a display-fun! I spent the whole day looking at all of the neat stuff they sell at Bloomingdale’s, I almost got lost on the table full of Brown Bags, can you find me? With all the traveling I’ve been doing maybe I need some new luggage, do you like this one?

After lunch it was time for a nap, so I laid down in a great big bed and dreamed of where I might go next…..

Tinley Park, Illinois

April 9, 2010

Hi Miss England’s first grade class,

I’m Scott, Miss England’s 16-year-old cousin.  Tidy Teddy traveled all the way to Tinley Park, Illinois to visit me during my spring break.  I found out he has visited other people in Illinois, because he told me all about the wonderful times he had visiting them.  I am very excited I finally got the chance to spend time with him.  The weather was not great, so we spent most of our time inside.  We still managed to stay busy and have lots of fun.  Thanks for letting me get to know your friend, Tidy Teddy!  I wrote short stories of what he did under each picture of him.

Love,

Scott

Fed-Ex delivered Tidy Teddy to my home through first class mail.  He said that he enjoyed the experience of riding in the box and that it was very cozy and peaceful inside it.  In this picture, he has just arrived at my house.

After arriving, Tidy Teddy decided to watch the Weather Channel to see what it would be like outside for the week.  Unfortunately, it rained during most of his visit, and he had to spend most of his time inside.

Because of the bad weather, Tidy Teddy and I started playing hide-and-seek inside.  It took me thirty-four minutes to find him once.  He ended up hiding in the light on the ceiling.  Can you find him?

In this picture, Tidy Teddy is using our telephone to make some calls to his friends and family.  He told his parents he arrived safe, let them know that he was having a good time, and said the people seemed nice.

I took Tidy Teddy to a magic show, and the magician asked for a volunteer.  He chose Tidy Teddy and ended up making him disappear!  The magician then pulled Tidy Teddy out of his hat and surprised everybody.

After the magician pulled him from the hat, Tidy Teddy took the magician’s magic wand, said, “Abra cadabra,” and pulled a rabbit out of the magician’s hat.  It was no ordinary rabbit, however.  It was Bugs Bunny!  Everybody clapped and cheered for Tidy Teddy.  He had a great time and said he wants to see another magic show soon.

Tidy Teddy was so busy having fun, here in Illinois, that he did not have time to go to the post office to mail his letters. Instead, we went to my mailbox, put his letters in, and flipped up the red flag so that the mail truck would pick them up and deliver them later.

While on the walk back to the house, from the mailbox, Tidy Teddy saw a fifty-dollar bill blowing down the street.  He ran over, picked it up, and asked me to take a picture of him holding it to show you.

Tidy Teddy went to the park, during the short time of nice weather, and met Red, the M&M.  They played catch with a football and had a fun time.  Tidy Teddy was so excited he got to spend time with Red and was glad he had the chance to exercise.  Red even let Tidy Teddy take a picture with him!

Tidy Teddy got thirsty and grabbed a juice box out of the refrigerator.  He relaxed in a chair and drank some very refreshing Minute Maid apple juice.  100% juice…YUM!

Tidy Teddy felt like coloring, so we found this Peanuts coloring book.  He worked on it for a long time and did a very nice job.  In this picture, he is finishing coloring these pictures of Snoopy and Linus.

After he finished coloring, Tidy Teddy really wanted to make a painting.  He gathered some paint and a paintbrush, and he began making a fan-shaped color wheel.  Here, Tidy Teddy poses with his finished painting

Tidy Teddy went to visit relatives who also live in Illinois.  They had a teddy bear picnic where they shared stories and took pictures.  Here is one of the pictures of Tidy Teddy and his family.

Tidy Teddy found a strange globe in the attic when he was exploring.  He touched the globe, and, blue and red light glowed from inside it.  All of the lines of light moved around inside the globe.  They all started at the large, red ball.  The light was blue until it touched the globe, where it turned red.  Tidy Teddy is not sure how this would happen without magic, so he thinks it is a magic crystal ball and, he made some wishes.  What would you wish for?

Tidy Teddy played with lots of toys, while at my house.  His favorites were the toy cars.  In this picture, he has a fire truck, police car, ambulance, and school bus.  He really liked the school bus because it reminded him of you, his favorite first grade class!

Phoenix, Arizona

April 5, 2010

Dear Miss England’s class,

Hello from Phoenix, Arizona! Phoenix is in the south west United States and would take over a day to drive from Nashville. So Tidy Teddy flew on an airplane for his visit and it only took about three hours. Phoenix is a desert climate, which means most of the year it is very hot and dry!

We had a lot of fun with Tidy Teddy. He quickly made friends with my three dogs and all we went camping together! Teddy helped to set up a tent for us to sleep in, and then we started a campfire. We cooked our dinner over the campfire and sat next to it to warm up when the sun went down. The next day we went for a hike and explored Arizona – everyone was so tired we slept in the car on the way home!

When we got back to Phoenix, Teddy and I went on a bike ride together. We talked about how it is important to wear a helmet to stay safe on the bike and Teddy had a special blue helmet to wear.

We had a great visit and Teddy is welcome back in Phoenix anytime!

Sincerely,
Emily, Andrew, Milo, Mocha, and Annabelle

Eudora, Kansas and St. Louis, Missouri

April 4, 2010

Dear Ms. England’s class,

We are excited to tell you that Tidy Teddy went with our family on a weekend trip to Eudora, Ks.  As some of you know, Mrs. Boles was born in southwest Kansas in a town called Garden City, located close to the Colorado and Oklahoma state lines.  Mrs. Boles’ parents, sisters, and nieces and nephews still live in Garden City and they all traveled the 7 hours to join us in Eudora for the weekend with her brother.  While in Kansas, Tidy Teddy learned a lot about the University of Kansas and their mascot, the Jayhawk.  (The University of Kansas is a place where students who have graduated from high school go to study how to become things like teachers, doctors, and lawyers.)  Tidy Teddy was so interested in the mystical bird that we decided to take him to Lawrence, the home of the Jayhawks, and take his picture with a statue of a Jayhawk.  After a long day of sight-seeing, Tidy Teddy just wanted to relax so we went back to Mrs. Boles’ brother’s house to rest.  We have enclosed a picture of Tidy Teddy sitting on the front porch with Mattie, Tucker, and their cousin Mia taking a break from all the car riding.

Traveling to Kansas takes a long time, almost 9.5 hours!  We have to drive across 4 states, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri before we can get to Kansas.  Even though it is a long trip, there are a lot of interesting things to see along the way.  One interesting sight is the arch in St. Louis.  The arch is said to be “the gateway” to the west and stands high in the air, like a rainbow, for all to see.   It is so big that we had a hard fitting the entire arch in the picture!  People can ride to the very top of the arch using special elevators, but we didn’t because they were closed on the day we went to visit. The arch is located near the riverfront.  Here, people can rent 4 person bicycles and ride up and down the sidewalk or take carriage rides like the ones here in downtown Nashville.  Many people hang out here just to enjoy the view of the arch and the river.  On the day we visited the arch, the water was so high that it was covering part of the road in some places!

After our visit to St. Louis, we got back in the car and headed for Nashville.  Tidy Teddy just couldn’t believe how flat the land was in Illinois and wanted us to take a picture.  He was also shocked to see that there were no buildings or houses near the interstate like in Nashville.

Thank you so much for letting Tidy Teddy come and visit Kansas with us over Easter weekend!

Boston, Massachusetts

April 4, 2010

Dear Ms. England’s Class,

The next day, we went down and visited Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, which is the home of the Boston Red Sox. It was opening day for baseball, and there were lots of people excited to see the team. Fenway Park has been the ballpark of the Boston Red Sox Baseball team since it opened in 1912, and is the oldest Major League Baseball Stadium currently in use. It is the only one of the original ballparks that is still in use and it is also the oldest venue used by a professional sports team in the United States.

Tidy Teddy loves baseball!

Your friend,

Matt
