Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Dear Class,

This weekend, Mr. Perkins and I visited Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We went out to breakfast near our friends’ house, and outside the restaurant, there were lots of chickens and lots of farm animals. Wisconsin has lots of farms and farmland, so it is common to see animals such as chickens, cows, and horses.

Did you know that Wisconsin is famous for its cheese? Dairy farmers in Wisconsin began making cheese in the 1800s when they had too much quality milk and needed to preserve it. Even today, the Wisconsin dairy industry helps keep cheese factories in business across the state. There are approximately 15,000 dairy farms in Wisconsin that have over 1.2 million cows. Each cow produces an average of 21,000 pounds of milk per year! The cheese makers use almost 90% of that milk. That’s a lot of cheese! Here is Tidy Teddy with a Cheese Head and Cheese Tie, which are popular at Green Bay Packers football games.

Love,

Ms. England
